Well, friends, it’s that time of year again: time for the fall edition of the One Room Challenge! I’ve been debating whether to participate this time, since I very much have my hands full with school, Etsy and trying to have a personal life (HA). But who are we kidding? Of course I’m gonna makeover another room!
I’ve told you all before about the previous owners of our house, and how they chose some interesting paint colors for a lot of the rooms. But I don’t think I’ve ever told you about or shown you our main floor bathroom! As far as bathrooms go, it’s fine. Builder grade tub and shower, small but manageable, perfectly fine, much like the rest of our house was when we moved in. Just one problem – the owners had it painted LIME GREEN – seriously- along with the vanity, to match a very bright patterned sink.
I painted the bathroom right away when we moved in, and (of course) forgot to take a before picture. But just picture the walls the same color as the vanity, and you’ll get an idea of what we were dealing with.
I painted the two bathrooms in our house with a beige-y grey, but I’m hoping to convince the hubby to let me repaint it white (duh). I’m also going to be doing this one room challenge on a very tight budget, since I’ve done enough spending money on projects in the year we’ve lived here. This means that my dream of white subway tile and a whirlpool tub will have to wait for now. But I’m still determined to make this bathroom beautiful without breaking the bank!
I’m a bit late to the game on this One Room Challenge, so this is actually week 2 of the ORC, meaning I only have 5 weeks to get some work done in here! I did a little Pinterest and internet browsing to get some inspiration for our affordable bathroom facelift, and here are my plans and some gorgeous examples!
Project 1: Vanity
The green has got to go. I’ll probably use a coat or two of white chalk paint, and maybe a bit of new hardware. I’d also love to upgrade the obnoxious sink, but we’ll see what I can find within our budget!

Project 2: Farmhouse Light Fixture
This light fixture above the sink is not doing the bathroom any favors. I’m going to see what I can do to update it without buying and installing an entirely new fixture. Maybe some edison bulbs…
Project 3: Paint
I’d love to give the bathroom a coat of Behr Swiss Coffee, my favorite shade of white. I think it would really lighten up the room and make it feel a bit bigger, since it is a pretty small space. I even have a gallon of paint still leftover from our kitchen, so it would be free! I may even try some faux shiplap which I’ve been seeing (and loving) all over the place lately!
Just look at all these beautiful white bathrooms:
Project 4: Shelves
We don’t store very much in our downstairs bathroom, so I’ll be taking out the opening vanity mirror, but we still want some space for simple toiletries and some cute decor! I think some farmhouse shelves will look perfect in the space above the toilet.
I think a set of floating (or faux-floating) shelves will look great!

Project 5: Mirror & Decor
I want to get rid of our boring vanity mirror, and put a pretty farmhouse mirror instead. I’ll probably DIY a mirror using a basic frameless mirror and a homemade wood frame. Look at all these gorgeous options!
It looks like I have my work cut out for me, but I can’t wait to see what the bathroom looks like in five short weeks. My goal is to keep the entire room makeover under $150, which may require some creative solutions, but I’m pretty good at being thrifty and I always like a challenge!
I hope you’ll follow along for this One Room Challenge with me! Tell me, are you doing the One Room Challenge this round, or working on giving any rooms in your house a facelift? As always, I’d love to hear from you!
